Sok Leang’s
Transformation
written by Vichheka Sok
Sok Leang has changed from the inside
since he got a job to work with World Vision and together with the
encouragement and emotional supports from his family and colleagues. He now
become a good leader and he keeps sharing his colleagues what he has learned
and own experienced to others
to be struggle and make positive change in the family as the community.
“I was a guy who always spent time with friends and enjoyed life outside, and sometimes late at night. I didn’t make a habit of saluting my parents, and I had never cared about improving my job performance,” shared 28-year-old Sok Leang Sim, manager of Prasat Balang II Area Development Programme, and the sixth of eight children of a middle class family.
Sok Leang never rejected an offer from his friends to enjoy drinking a beer together. He was good at drinking; this caused him to become unhealthy. Sok Leang looked very skinny, and everyone within the village recognized him as an alcoholic at a young age.
Even thought Sok Leang was a guy who really enjoyed with friends outside having a drink and going out for pleasure, he never given up learning. He is a curious guy to learn new things.
Sok Leang, now healthy with a fair complexion and thin figure grins, “I know I have changed since I have been in World Vision since 2004. I committed to change myself when I got a job to work with World Vision because I want to do the best for World Vision and community. I want to set as a good example for other staffs. I am always reflecting on my life and what I had done before. It’s different now. I appreciate what I have learned and how this has transformed my attitude from the inside.”
Sok Leang never misses devotions and reflection times with his teams every Sunday, and he shares that many verses of the Bible have provided a strong inspiration to him and transformed him. Sitting cross-legged on the floor, surrounded by other colleagues, he smiles, “I really love my family and my work. I am always encouraged by my family and my colleagues, especially all the verses that have really awakened me and made me a considerate person. I love to work with the poor to make change in the community.”
Sok Leang always works hard with all his heart, and this leads him to become a better leader now. Sok Leang thinks about every word; in order to never hurt others. He is friendly and motivates his staff to work hard and keep improving and learning. Sok Leang keeps discovering and learning from other higher leaders as his own example and in order to improve the negative points in himself.
“Without working with World Vision, I think I would not have been so transformed. I think to show my gratitude to World Vision I have to keep working hard with the poor and help them,” recalls Sok Leang, while others colleagues are listening with smiling faces.
“I have known Sok Leang for more than one year, and I see he has completely changed. He was a guy who always spent his spare time with friends, drank beer and was careless about his health. Yet, he is now a good manager and is very committed in his working life. He shares his experience to other staff and always keeps learning. His change is a good model for others,” smiles Savda Mao, 26, LfT technical officer.
